Retail Banking Congress – In quest for stability

On November the 9th and 10th a Retail Banking Congress took place in Warsaw. The main topic was "Quest for stability". The congress was organized by Gdańska Akademia Bankowa, PKO Bank Polski S.A. and Biuro Informacji Kredytowej.

Mr. Markus Krall, Partner Rolland Berger Strategy Consultants, held an inaugural speech on the role of ratings in creating financial stability and instability with a special view on the future of the eurozone. The main points of the speech covered:
  • Critical role of ratings in the workings of the credit markets
  • Need to make markets safer and more stable for the future
  • Greek and Euro zone crisis and our Eureca plan proposal
It was followed by the speech of Mr. Bruce Packard from Seymour Pierce on "Ring-fencing of retail banking and the implications of the Independent Commission on Banking report".

Congress covered also two plenary sessions. The first session covered the topic of "Retail banking in host countries in the light of the eurozone crisis". It was moderated by Zbigniew Jagiełło, President of PKO Bank Polski S.A.. Among panelists were:
  • Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, Chair of the Economic Council to the Polish Prime Minister
  • Jan Vincent-Rostowski, Polish Minister of Finance
  • Andrzej Jakubiak, Chairperson of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority
  • Włodzimierz Kiciński, President, Nordea Bank Polska S.A.
  • Mateusz Morawiecki, President, Bank Zachodni WBK S.A.
  • Andrzej Sławiński, General Director, Economic Institute, National Bank of Poland
  • Małgorzata Zaleska, Member of the Board, National Bank of Poland
The second plenary session touched on the topic of the global outlook for consumer lending – business models in banking and how to adapt them for retail banking in Central Europe. It was moderated by Michael Lafferty, Chairman, Lafferty Group. Panelists group included:
  • Piercarlo Gera, Global Managing Director of Accenture Strategy Practice in Financial Services
  • Bruce Packard, Analyst, Seymour Pierce
  • Tim Rooney, Managing Director, Global Head of Credit Products, Deutsche Bank
  • Ben Tellings, Chairman, ING DiBa
  • Józef Wancer, Board Advisor, Deloitte
During the congress there were also three specialist sessions covering following topics:
  • Financing sources in retail banking
  • New technologies and innovations in retail banking
  • Micro-enterprises in retail banking
